The Joint Fires capability for the 2nd Division is provided by Light Artillery Batteries which are Under Command of Army Reserve (Ares) Infantry Battalions. During the period 21-24 May 12, a Unit Establishment Review (UER) was conducted for the Reserve Artillery units and Sub units within 2nd Division (2 Div). The outcomes of the UER required the disestablishment of existing 2 Div RAA regimental structures, 2/10, 7 and 23 Field Regiments and the establishment of Light Artillery Batteries equipped with the 81 mm Mortar within designated ARes Infantry Battalions and the establishment of a Joint Fires Cell within HQ 2 Div, as follows:

7 Light Battery, 2/17 Royal New South Wales Regiment, 8 Brigade;

23 Light Battery, 4/3 Royal New South Wales Regiment, 5 Brigadede; and

Joint Fires Cell, HQ 2 Div.
Personnel Totals: 70 ARes and 2 Australian Regular Army (ARA)
Role: To provide a Joint Force capability in support of an ARes Multi Role Brigade Group equipped with the 81mm Mortar
Tasks:
*
Provide a Joint Fire Effects Control Centre and three Joint Fire Teams;
*
Respond to call for fire from the Brigade Group and from any supported Multirole Combat Brigade Joint Fire Effects Control Centre;
*
Conduct planning and coordination of all Joint Force capabilities allocated to the Brigade Group in accordance with the Brigade Group Plan;
*
Provide a deployable mortar line;
*
Facilitate the passage of tactical information; and
*
Command and Control of the mortar line.
Note: The Joint Fire Effects Control Centre Main and a Joint Fires Team in 4,9,11 and 13 Bde have been frozen until the ARes Joint Force concept has been proven on Exercise Hamel 14/15.
HQ 2 Div Joint Fires Cell.
Role. To provide Technical Control of the Joint Fires capability within the Division.
Tasks: The Joint Fires cell is engaged in the following current tasks:

ensure Joint Fires capability is sustainable, efficient and develops within the Division;
*
support validation of RAA UER 2012 and trial at Exercise HAMEL 14;
*
manage the ARes Light Artillery training model:
*
manage Joint Fire Effects Control Centre training;
*
advising the G3 on Mortar ammunition allocation;
*
advising the G4 on Mortar equipment and ceremonial Gun distribution;
*
in conjunction with Combined Arms Training Centre trade policy cell, provide trade advice to the Light Batteries;
*
provide Mortar safety advice to Brigades;
*
provide Artillery Light and Joint Fires instructor/Subject Matter Expert support to the Brigades as required, and
