Though not unexpected, Barry was taken form us and farewelled on 20 March 2001. It was heartening to hear that he went without pain, with dignity and in peace. Val was very well prepared.

Barry was a most likable character amongst the first tour of Vietnam 105 blokes. He had an honest an open approach to matters and did not carry a chip on his shoulder for his lot. He could not only give cheek, but knew how to receive it when due.

If there will be one thing for which he is remembered, it will be the fight he put up over the last few years. Many a bloke would have given up long before, but not Barry. His positive attitude throughout was a shining example to the rest of us, and it is hoped that others will follow his example.

There was a strong gathering of his 105 and 1 RAR mates at the Albany Creek Chapel and the entry of his casket carried by his Vietnam gun detachment brought tears to many a hardened veteran.

In February, the Queensland Chapter 23 of the International Society of the 173rd Airborne Brigade (Separate) presented Val Voyzey with a special Award for Courage for Barry. The last words of this famed certificate say it all: ‘You have acted with honour, with dignity, and with the tenacity and courage that leaves a legacy for all ex-soldiers to emulate.’
