Daniel Pollard died unexpectedly at his home in Heathcote, Victoria on 11 July 2016. Daniel was born in Carlton, Victoria on 12 August 1969 and commenced his service in the Army on 29 October 1986 aged 17. His career highlights include numerous postings to 1st Field Regiment, 4th Field Regiment and the School of Artillery, as well as seeing active service at Butterworth, Malaysia in 1988, and with the Force Communications Unit, United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia in 1993. This unit was subsequently awarded the Meritorious Unit Citation.

In later years, Daniel also served at eh School of Armour, the Proof and Experimental Unit at Graytown, and was Battery Sergeant Major (BSM) of 53rd Battery in 2011 – 2012. He was then posted to the Royal Military College Duntroon in 2013 prior to a posting back to Puckapunyal to the Army Knowledge Group. He then transferred to the Active Reserve on 30 June 2015 to pursue a new career with the Victorian Police Service.

Following his long and distinguished military career, he excelled with the Police Service and thoroughly enjoyed the extra time the career gave him with his family. He was conducting a Certificate IV in Personal Training whilst conducting classes at a gymnasium in Bendigo in which he had a business interest. Daniel continued in a Reserve capacity assisting the Centre for Army Lessons with Land Doctrine Centre but continued to find time to work on his property and restore his classic cars.

He was forever proud to be a professional soldier. Always a gunner. He was an outstanding instructor, and a true leader who cared for his men and was passionate about his duty. We will remember the compassion, the honesty, and especially his wicked sense of humour, which will leave a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. As at 11 July 2016, Danny had served for just over 29 years and eight months.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Daniel’s wife of 22 years, Daniela, and their children Lochlann and Anita as they struggle with the sudden loss of a loving family man and true friend.
